The Second Chakra: Sacral Chakra

Last week we focused on the first chakra, Muladhara. The first chakra is your foundation. Starting at the root this chakra’s element is earth. The energy and focus of the root chakra is grounding, stability, security and abundance.

Working our way up the spine, you will notice they each work together and intertwine. For example, in the first chakra, we learned to ground, stabilize and focus. In the second chakra we start to balance the heaviness from the energy of the root chakra with flow and a sense of letting go. When our second chakras are balanced we allow ourselves to be fully present and to authentically express our emotions in healthy ways.

Second Chakra: svadisthana chakra (Sacral Chakra)

Element: Water

Color: Orange

This chakra -located just below the navel- governs self-wroth, desire, sensuality, and creativity.

Location: Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel

Balanced Characteristics: Open to the world around them, Graceful movement, emotional intelligence, ability to experience pleasure, self-care, care for others, ability to change, healthy boundaries

Excess: Pleasure, addiction, Excessively strong emotions, ruled by emotions, over sensitive, poor boundaries, obsessive attachment, emotional dependency

Deficiency: Rigid in body and attitudes, poor social skills, denial of pleasure, excessive boundaries, fear of change, lack of desire, passion and excitement

While reflecting, be aware of the level of guilt you hold. Guilt is not a bad emotion. There is a healthy place for it. Guilt allows you to feel and examine behavior before, during or after our actions. Guilt divides light against dark, good against bad. Guilt can quickly become distorted and no longer supportive. The greater the guilt we have, the more we try to free ourselves by flawless behavior. Life is not meant to be flawless. We are meant to go through challenging times, learn from them and move forward. When we try to exhibit flawless behavior it can inhibit the natural flow of energy. When guilt becomes excessive and habitual is when this water-like energy center becomes blocked.

Diet: Orange foods: oranges, tangerines, peaches, carrots, pumpkin and sweet potatoes. Fish, nuts, seeds, and coconuts.

Mantra: “I am radiant, beautiful and strong and enjoy a healthy and passionate life.”

Asana (yoga postures) : Postures that focus on the hips. It is important to note: open hips are just as important as strength in your hips as well. Remember we are *balancing* the chakras.

Half-Pigeon, Frog Pose, Half-Moon, and (Half) Happy Baby to name a few.

*See above* and figure out if you are excessive, deficient, or balanced in this energy center.

Maybe your hips can help you out if you’re unsure?

How you feel in your hips is a good indication of how balanced your second chakra is.

Aromatherapy: Sandalwood, Patchouli, Orange, Clary Sage, Jasmine, Rosemary.

Self-study questions to reflect and learn more about YOUR sacral chakra:

"If we were all to sit in a circle,

we would laugh at each other for lack originality."
